WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Freshman
Shelby Winkelmann led the No. 23 Central Missouri Jennies with 42 points, as UCM defeated the No. 21 Emporia State Hornets, 84-63. Winkelmann's 42-point performance is the third-highest total in Jennies basketball history, and the highest total scored by any Jennies player in the history of the Multipurpose Building.
The Hornets (3-3, 0-2 MIAA) took a narrow lead to start the game, scoring the first basket on a jumper from Rachel Hanf. Central Missouri (6-1, 1-1 MIAA) took the lead for the first time after
Nicole Caddell's jumper put her team in front 8-6 at the 15:51 mark of the first half.
UCM held onto the lead throughout most of the first half, but a quick 6-0 run by Emporia State tied the score at 23-23 with 6:17 to play until halftime. Junior
Symone Murray answered on the next possession with a jumper to reclaim the lead, then after a ESU miss, Winkelmann hit one of her 16 field goals on the night to build up a 27-23 advantage.
Emporia State kept the score close through the rest of the first half, until the Jens finished on a 7-0 run, highlighted by three points apiece from Caddell and
Quinnecia Twine. UCM went into the break with a 38-30 lead, as Winkelmann scored 17 of her 42 points before intermission, on 6-of-8 shooting.
The Jens stretched their lead in the first three minutes of the second half, going on a 6-0 run. Extending their lead to 18 midway through the second half, Winkelmann scored nine straight points, putting the Jennies in front 62-44 with 9:25 to play. UCM's largest lead of the night came near the end of the game, as Caddell's layup with 1:17 to play capped a 10-4 run and gave the Jens a 84-61 lead.
Winkelmann collected 11 rebounds as well, picking up her second double-double of the year. Caddell reached double figures, scoring 17 points in the win.
The Jennies return to action on December 18, as they take on Dixie State (Utah) in the first of two games at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Central, as both games during the trip will be broadcast on 98.5 The Bar, 1450 KOKO, and warrensburgradio.com.
