MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Central Missouri Mules used a balanced offensive attack to beat Upper Iowa 74-67 on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcat Classic at Bearcat Arena. Ten different players scored for UCM, including two players in double figures and eight players with six or more points.
The Mules (3-1) jumped to an early 5-2 lead, but the Peacocks (2-2) scored six straight points to grab an 8-5 lead at the 16:58 mark of the first half. That's when the UCM offense and defense took over.
Charles Hammork scored an acrobatic layup to pull the Mules within one and spark a 23-0 run that would give the Mules the lead for good.
Central Missouri held Upper Iowa without a field goal for nearly nine minutes and the Mules shot 10-for-13 during that span to open a 28-8 lead. The Peacocks wouldn't go away though, clawing their way back with a 22-12 run over the next seven minutes to pull within 10 at 40-30 with 1:13 left in the half.
Reggie Stallings drained a couple of free throws with just under a minute to play and the Mules went into the intermission leading 42-30.
Central Missouri scored eight of the first 12 points out of the break to push the lead back to 16 at 50-34 with 15:53 to play. The game see-sawed from there until UIU was able to cut the lead to nine at 61-52 at the 10:21 mark.
A 7-2 run by the Mules pushed the lead back to 14 with 8:42 to play in the game. The Peacocks again cut the lead to nine only to see the Mules push the lead back to double digits with under a minute to play. UCM made 5-of-7 free throws down the stretch to ice the game and take the seven point win.
Dominique Long led UCM with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and foul line.
Reggie Stallings added a season-high 11 to go along with a team-high five rebounds.
The Mules shot 54 percent (27-of-50) from the field and were 7-of-14 from three-point range. UCM was 13-of-19 from the charity stripe for 68 percent.
Upper Iowa was led by Grant Lang and Tucker Wentzien with 16 points each, while Bo Pagel added 11. The Peacocks were 27-of-62 for 44 percent from the floor and 9-of-26 for 35 percent from beyond the arc. UIU was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
The Mules forced Upper Iowa into 17 turnovers compared to just 10 for UCM. The Mules had seven steals and seven assists in the game.
