ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Jennies soccer (16-2-5) saw their 2012 season come to an end in the Central Regional Final, falling to Minnesota State 5-4 (17-1-4) in a shootout Friday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field after playing to a 1-1 draw in double overtime.
The first half was a defensive battle for both teams, with neither able to find the back of the net.
That all changed in the second half though when Minnesota State's Emily Morris put the Mavericks up 1-0 in the 67th minute on a cross pass from Brianne West. The Jennies answered right back just nine minute later in the 76th minute when
Alexis Robbers headed home a corner kick from
Kayla Shain for the equalizer. It marked Robbers' team-high 11th goal and Shain's team-high seventh assist.
The Jennies and Mavericks played to a stalemate the final 14 minutes and the match went into overtime.
The Jens and Mavs played to a draw in the first overtime period, sending the match into a second period of extra time. Again the two teams battled and neither found the back of the net, forcing the match into a penalty-kick shootout to decide who would advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA-II Tournament.
The Jennies converted their first three attempts but the fourth was saved by Maverick goalkeeper Molly McGough. The Jens made the fifth kick to keep them in the shootout but all the Mavericks had to do was make their final PK. Minnesota State's Ashley Sykora converted, giving the Mavericks the 5-4 victory.
The Jennies end their season with a 16-2-5 overall record. They advanced to the NCAA-II Round of 16 for the second time in school history and the first time since 2010. The Jennies also captured their fifth MIAA Regular Season Title in the past six seasons.
