Saraethea Brown led the Central Missouri Jennies with 19 points, but ultimately fell just short against the #16 Pittsburg State Gorillas, 72-67. The Gorillas scored the final six points to pull ahead in the last minute and a half for the win.
The Gorillas led for the first six minutes of the game, taking an early 7-2 lead before the Jennies answered with seven straight points, to take a 9-7 edge. The Jennies took their biggest lead of the game on one of Brown's three treys, to go up 27-21 at the 3:49 mark of the first half. Pittsburg State outscored UCM 8-4 from that point to trim the Jennies lead to 31-29 at intermission.
After PSU's
Brooke Conley scored to tie the game on the Gorilla's first possession of the second half, Brown hit a pair of jumpers to give the Jens a 35-31 edge. The Jennies maintained a narrow lead for the next five minutes of the second half, until an 8-2 run from Pittsburg tied the game at 45-45 with 12:18 to play. The two sides traded the lead back and forth until free throws from Conley and
Amanda Orloske gave Pittsburg State the lead for good.
The Jennies shot 45.6% (26-57) from the field, compared to the Gorillas' 36.2% (21-58) performance, but also committed 15 turnovers to PSU's seven.
Nicole Caddell kept the Jennies alive in the second half, scoring 10 of her 15 in the second session. Caddell also collected seven rebounds.
Alyssa Rhodes also finished in double figures, scoring 12 points to go along with six boards.
The Jennies fall to 14-5 with the loss, and 8-5 in the MIAA. The Jens will try to bounce back when they host the #17 Emporia State Hornets this Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Building.
