Mules cruise past Truman State 54-30

Box Score (WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The 20th-ranked Central Missouri Mules scored touchdowns on their first three drives and racked up 571 yards of total offense en route to a 54-30 win over Truman State on Saturday, Family Day, at Walton Stadium/Kennedy Field. The Mules used a balanced attack with 353 yards through the air and 218 on the ground to delight the Family Weekend crowd of 10,387 fans and those watching on the MIAA Television Network.
            The Mules (3-1, 3-1 MIAA) wasted no time in jumping on the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-3 MIAA) scoring a touchdown on the opening possession. UCM went 72 yards in 14 plays capped off by a 14-yard Tommy Corwin to Jamar Howard touchdown pass. After forcing Truman into a three-and-out the Mules struck again. Corwin found David Cannon from 16 yards out to give UCM a 14-0 lead with 7:34 to play in the opening quarter.
            Truman State got on the board on its next possession with a 28-yard field goal by Derek Koon. It capped a 10-play, 82-yard drive that started on the Bulldog seven yard line.
            The Mules didn't waste any time extending the lead to 21-3 on a one-yard plunge by Darrian Salter. A 39-yard Corwin to Howard pass on the first play of the series set UCM up inside the Truman 20.
            The teams traded punts on the next two possessions before Truman pulled to within 21-10 on a two-yard Harnish Ayora touchdown run. The Bulldogs started the drive in UCM territory at the 44-yard line after the Mules were forced to punt from their own endzone.
            UCM continued to attack through the air on the next possession as Corwin completed passes of 16 and 12 before hooking up with Taylor Dyer for a 38-yard touchdown and the Mules led 28-10. Truman State took the next possession 59 yards in 12 plays, but the Mules' defense stiffened and held the Bulldogs to a 32-yard field goal by Koon and the lead was 28-13.
            Central Missouri took over on its own 33 with 2:20 to play in the half, but immediately went searching for more. Camren Torneden had rushes of nine and seven yards to set UCM up near midfield. Corwin then completed passes of seven, nine and eight yards to get the Mules to the TSU 22 yard line with eight seconds left in the half. On the final play of the stanza, Corwin found Howard wide open in the flat and he dove into the endzone as time expired for the touchdown to give UCM a 35-13 lead at halftime.
            Corwin was 22-of-27 for 269 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, while Howard had six catches for 100 yards and pair of touchdowns.
            The first play of the third quarter gave UCM a 37-13 lead when the ball was snapped over TSU quarterback J.B. Clark's head into the endzone for a safety.
            Corwin was picked off on the ensuing possession and the Bulldogs took over at the Central Missouri 30-yard line. TSU was unable to move the ball and had to settle for another Koon field goal, this one from 42 yards out to cut the UCM lead to 37-16.
            The Mules drove into Truman territory yet again on the next possession and a 34-yard Aaron Jamieson field goal gave Central Missouri a 40-16 lead.
            After forcing a Bulldog punt, the Mules took over at their own 23 and one play later led 47-16. Freshman LaVance Taylor took a handoff and went straight up the middle for a 77-yard touchdown, the first of his career.
            The Bulldogs took just three plays to strike back with a touchdown of their own. Clark passed for 61 yards to Kurt Loyd on the first play of the series to set TSU up at the UCM four. Two plays later Clark found Anthony Brown for a Truman touchdown and the UCM lead was 47-23.
            The Mules made it 54-23 at the end of the third quarter when Torneden took a handoff and raced to the outside before diving to the pylon for the 18-yard score.
            The Bulldogs finished off the scoring with a four-play, 49-yard drive capped by a Clark to Paul Taylor 19-yard touchdown to make it 54-30.
            Corwin finished the day 32-of-41 for 360 yards and four touchdowns. Howard had a team-high nine catches for 129 yards and two scores. Cannon also had nine catches for 94 yards a TD. 10 different receivers caught passes for the Mules.
            UCM rushed for 218 yards, while Taylor had eight rushes for 110 yards and a score. Torneden finished with 52 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown.
            Defensively, Patrick Lewis led the Mules with 12 tackles. Evan Knight had eight stops as the defense racked up five tackles for loss and three sacks.
            Central Missouri is back in action next Saturday, October 1 at home against non-conference foe Arkansas Tech at 1:30 p.m.
