No. 8 volleyball Jennies knock off Missouri Southern in straight sets
(JOPLIN, Mo.) – The No. 8 Central Missouri Jennies extended their winning streak to four games with a 3-0 win over the Lions of Missouri Southern, 25-12, 25-19, 25-20. Senior hitter Paula Harris led the Jennies attack with 13 kills and five total blocks. Defensively, libero Taylor Krejci had a team-high 11 digs.
      The Jennies took advantage of 20 attack errors by the Lions, lowering the Missouri Southern hitting percentage to just .163. UCM picked up five kills on their first five attacks in the opening set, jumping out to an early 8-3 lead. Central Missouri finished off the first game without much trouble, allowing only one error while taking advantage of seven attack errors from the Lions.
      The Lions picked up the pace at the start of the second set, taking a quick 3-1 lead and holding the Jennies even at 6-6, by avoiding unforced errors that gave away seven points in the first set. Central Missouri quickly edged out to a three point lead, and was able to grind out the rest of the set for the win. The Jens again had their hands full in the third set, as Missouri Southern took a 5-3 lead early. Central Missouri regained control of the lead, but was unable to build a substantial edge until a six point run put the match away.
      Senior Kelsey Ortwerth set a new career high with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage on the night, going 5-for-5.  With the win, Central Missouri improves to 9-3 on the year, and stay perfect in MIAA play, at 3-0. The Jennies are back in action next Friday, September 30, at the Pittsburg State Gorilla Classic, as they take on St. Edwards (Tex.) and Pittsburg State.
