(Warrensburg, Mo.) - The No. 9 University of Central Missouri Jennies soccer team (1-0-0) picked up a 3-1 victory in their opening game of the 2011 season at Nebraska-Kearney Thursday night.
The Jennies used a 10-4 shot advantage over the host Lopers to seal the victory and extend their regular season winning streak to 26 consecutive matches.
The first goal of the contest came in the 19th minute and was delivered by
Alyssa Rhodes (Olathe, Kan.), her first goal of the 2011 season. Rhodes hammered a header from
Carly Stanley's (De Soto, Kan.) corner kick into the net to get the Jennies on the board. Nebraska-Kearney would answer in the 22nd minute though, as Merydeth Cummings scored off an assist from Raliegh Mercer to tie the game at one.
Freshman
Nicki Wisnasky (Godfrey, Ill.) would break the tie and put the Jennies back on top four minutes later, controlling a long pass from
Kayla Shain (Olathe, Kan.) and pounding it past Nebraska-Kearney goalkeeper Marissa Niday to make it 2-1 Central Missouri.
Central Missouri tallied six shots in the first half, compared to only one by the Lopers and also had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half saw the Jennies score a third goal after
Jenna Stones (Olathe, Kan.) delivered a kick from 60 yards out that was fumbled into the net by Kearney's goalkeeper in the 88 minute.
Central Missouri goalkeeper
Brooke Cooley (Alton, Ill.) picked up her first win of the season, netting two saves for the Jennies.
