(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – In a rematch of the 2010 South Central Regional title, the No. 6 Central Missouri Jennies defeated the No. 5 Washburn Lady Blues for the second regional title in as many years.
The Jennies led most of the first and second sets, as the Lady Blues only led 1-0 after the match's opening point. Washburn rallied late in game two, taking four straight points when the Jennies had set point, but fell short after a service error gave UCM the win. Washburn answered with a 25-22 win in the third set, gaining momentum in the match. After trailing throughout much of the fourth set, the Jennies mounted an 8-2 run that turned the set from a 12-10 Washburn lead into an 18-14 UCM advantage. The Jens survived the Washburn comeback attempt and took the set, 25-20.
The hitting trio of
Allie Huffman,
Paula Harris, and
Bradye Peniston led the Jennies with 14 kills apiece; Peniston put up a 14-for-24 (.583 hitting pct.) performance without a single attack error in the championship match.
Defensively, seniors Huffman (16),
Taylor Krejci (23) and
Kelsey Ortwerth (17) recorded double-figure digs.
The regional title is the eighth in program history. The site of the NCAA Elite Eight will be announced next week, and will be hosted on the campus of one of the eight remaining teams. The Elite Eight will kick off December 1 with the national quarterfinals.
