Shaquanda Wiggins scored 24 points in her first game as a member of the Central Missouri Jennies, as UCM defeated the Evangel Crusaders, 89-54, in the UCM Multipurpose Building. Wiggins shot 11-for-12 from the field and collected seven rebounds in the victory.
Senior forward
Nicole Caddell earned a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while playing out of position as the starting point guard. Caddell has six double-doubles in her career at Central Missouri.
The Jennies scored the first two field goals of the game, with a pair of layups from Wiggins and senior
Renae Shippy. The Jens' lead stretched to 12 near the nine-minute mark of the first half, when
Taylor Hanson hit one of her three three-pointers while getting fouled. Hanson then sinked the free throw to complete the four-point play.
UCM took a 13-4 run midway through the second half to stretch their lead to 59-37 with nine minutes left in the game. The Jennies used a 47-23 rebounding advantage to outscore the Crusaders 16-2 in second chance points. Central Missouri also was able to work the ball inside all night, scoring 48 points in the paint, compared to 20 points from Evangel. The Crusaders forced more turnovers than UCM, 16-13, but the Jennies took advantage of the extra opportunities, outscoring Evangel off turnovers, 22-11.
The win marks the seventh season-opening victory during head coach
Dave Slifer's tenure at UCM; the Jennies are 7-1 during his eight seasons. It was also the program's 11th win in as many meetings with Evangel.
The Jennies hit the road for a pair of tough matchups at Midwestern State this week. The Jens will face the host Mustangs on Friday, November 18 at 7 p.m. before taking on East Central (Okla.) the following Saturday, at 5 p.m.
