th minute of play, giving the No. 12 University of Central Missouri Jennies (11-1-0, 4-0-0 MIAA) a hard fought 1-0 victory over Emporia State University (1-7-4, 0-4-0 MIAA) Sunday afternoon in an MIAA Match at ESU Pitch in Emporia, Kansas.
The first half was a defensive battle between both teams, with neither team able to find the back of the net. The Jennies outshot the Lady Hornets 16-1 in the first half, with a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Jennies' goalkeeper
Brooke Cooley (Alton, Ill.) picked up one save in the half.
Most of the second half was just like the first, with both teams struggling to find the goal thanks to a strong wind across ESU Pitch and great goalkeeping by both Cooley and Schmitz. That would change in the 85
th minute though, when Rhodes connected on the pass by Sidebottom to give Central Missouri a 1-0 lead. That lead would stick the rest of the match, giving the Jennies their 11
th win overall and fourth conference win this season.
Central Missouri outshot Emporia State 35-5 in the match, including a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Jennies' goalie Cooley tallied a season-high four saves and improved her record in goal to 11-1-0 with five shutouts this season.
With the game winning goal, Rhodes now has a team-high eight goals this season. Sidebottom picks up her first assist of 2011 today with the game winning pass to Rhodes.
The Jennies trek west to Hays, Kansas Thursday for an MIAA Match with the Fort Hays State University Tigers. First kick is set for 6 p.m.
