WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Student-Athletes from the University of Central Missouri Literacy Team have been out and about in Warrensburg visiting local elementary schools to promote the importance of reading skills to young students.

The Mules and Jennies' Literacy Team has made visits to Ridgeview Elementary, Sterling Elementary and Maple Grove Elementary. The final visit will take place Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Martin Warren Elementary.

At each of the school visits, teams of Mules' and Jennies' student-athletes read newly purchased books to students. The new books, selected by the librarians at the elementary schools, are purchased in conjunction with the literacy program.

Funds to purchase the new books are being provided through the Eleanor and Carol Hughes Memorial Fund at the University of Central Missouri, with additional funding provided by many of the UCM Athletic sponsors.

The Literacy Team program was initiated in the fall of 1992 and is designed to provide interaction between Mules' and Jennies' student-athletes and local elementary students with the focus on reading skills.
